From 1910 to 2001, the Apartaments of Liberty Crest were known as Lorton Reformatory, a prison in Lorton, Virginia, which housed Washington inmates, DC

It is more widely known as the site where many suffragists were heroes after Silent Sentinels pickets in the White House in 1917. And according to the Library of Congress, on November 14, 1917, it is known as the “Night of Toys to Prisons”.

The Lorton Reformatory was built in 1910 and closed in 2001.

The property of 2,324 Acres, which included a farm, closed in 2001. The following year, Fairfax County bought the site for $ 4.2 million. Under the property of the county, the old prison and the land became a park, a golf course, three schools and an arts center.

In 2008, the County began working with Alexander Company, a Wisconsin developer with a history of historical preservation and adaptive reuse. The developer set out to convert the campus into 165 apartments.

“The Lorton Reformatory was a good set of buildings to become residential because it was a prison of the reform era,” says David Vos, Alexander Company development project manager.

“Then, unlike most prisons that tend to be large dark fingerprint buildings with windows, the thesis actually had a great light and had a bit of character, so well designed for apartments.”

The rent in the Apartaments Liberty Crest varies from $ 1,372 to $ 2,700.

The Liberty Crest Apartments have 165 units-44 of which low-income affordable homes are designated. There are 8 two two bedroom apartments and 81 two bedrooms and the monthly rent varies from $ 1,372 to $ 2,700. Each apartment is equipped with a washing machine and dryer in the unit.

The renovations took almost two years and approximately $ 64 million to complete.

Most project funds came from historical tax credits, financing of low -income fiscal housing bond credits. Virginia Housing produced the first mortgage for the project and the payments are approximately $ 125,000 per month.

The apartments opened in June 2017 and you say that all the available units were leased in a matter of months. The complex has been in full occupation since then.

“The reaction of the community varied quite a lot. Many people really felt that it was important to preserve that story. However, there were people who really focused on the last year of the prisoners who were missing,” Soes.

“But from our point of position, we really feel it is important

“There are a number of reminders while walking on the campus that remind you of the fact that it used to be a reformatory or prison,” says you.

Some remains of the old prison include visitors’ signs and inmates on how to behave on the property.

There is also a field on the campus with the original tribune that was made by the same brick prisoners. Today, space is used as a purple area for residents.

The Liberty Crest property also has a preschool, dental office, restaurants and retail stores.

The apartments have been open for almost nine years and the construction of the property is mostly complete. You and the Alexander company currently focus on converting an energy plant that is located on the site into 10 additional apartments. There are also plans to transform the old guard rooms.
