Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed the condolences of his country to the Christian world for the death of Pope Francis on Monday, only one day after leading Easter celebrations in the Vatican.
In a statement, Herzog said:
I send my deepest condolences to the Christian world and as special Christian communities in Israel, the Holy Land, about the loss of his great spiritual father, his holiness, Pope Francis. A man of deep faith and unlimited compassion, dedicated his life to elevate the poor and ask for peace in a problematic world. Rightly, he saw great importance in fostering strong ties with the Jewish world and in the progress of the interreligious dialogue as a path to greater understanding and mutual respect.
I really hope that their prayers for peace in the Middle East and for the safe return of the hostages will soon be answered.

Herzog’s rhetoric occurred despite the growing tensions between the Vatican and Israel under Pope Francis, who took an increasingly pro-palenin line following the terrorist attacks of October 7.
The Latin Patriarchato of Jerusalem announced that a special Mass in Memory of Pope Francis will take place in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in the Vieja City on Wednesday.
Herzog will accept the credentials of the American ambassador Mike Huckabee, the first evangelical Christian on paper, later on Monday.
