(UPI), numerous celebrities, including Russell Crowe, Whoopi Goldberg, Antonio Banderas and Robin Roberts, tok social networks on Monday to cry the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88.
The 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church and the first Latin American Pontiff died hours after greeting the United States vice president, JD Vance, in the Vatican and navigate the Plaza de San Pedro in its population to bless thousands of people in Sunay Sunay.
He had been seriously ill, fighting respiratory problems for weeks, but had promised not to retire.
“A beautiful day in Rome, but, a sad day for the faithful. Rip Francis,” Crowe wrote in X, a photo of the Italian city.
“He was the closest in a long time that seemed to remember that the love of Christ wrapped the believer and none of the believers,” Goldberg said on Instagram.
“Hey, he felt more like Pope John on 23 who made belief a reality. Saves the French Pope with your love for humanity and laughter.”
“Pope Francis has died, a man who, at the head of the Catholic Church, showed children, love and mercy to the most needy,” Antonio Banderas wrote on Instagram.
Eva Longoria said: “Rest in peace, his Holiness Pope Francis. Thank you for being an ally for many of us and speaking for the marginalized. His compassion, kindness and humility will always be remembered.”
Good Morning America host, Robin Roberts, said in X: “Very sad to wake up with the news of Pope Francis’s death at the age of 88.”
