President Donald Trump reacted Monday morning to the announcement of the Vatican that Pope Francis died.
The Catholic spiritual leader was 88 years old.
“Rest in peace Pope Francis! God bless him and everyone who loved him!” Trump published in Truth Social.
Pope Francis rose to the role in March 2013 after the historical resignation of his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI. Originally from Argentina, he was the first Latin American leader of the Catholic Church.
The Vatican made the announcement on Monday morning that Pope Francis had died at his residence at the Santa Marta del Vatican house.
“Dear brothers and sisters, it is with deep sadness that I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francisco,” Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced on the Vatican television channel through control. He continued:
