The second largest telecommunications operator in the country, Bharti Airtel (Airs), has formally approached the government to convert its deferred fees into capital under the 2021 telecommunications reform package, looking for a leveling playing field.

The company led by Sunil Bharti Mittal has approached the Telecommunications Department (DOT), pressing the equitable application of the capital conversion clause.

The measure occurs because the government increases its participation in Vodafone Idea to more than 49 percent recently.

The vodafone idea liabilities became capital in March by the center, which increased government participation in the company to 49 percent from 22.6 percent before. The center converted ₹ 36,950 million rupees or the outstanding idea of Vodafone in capital.

“All companies can request according to the reform package. The government will make a decision after properly evaluating the application, and any new capital conversion will decide on a case -by -case basis,” government sources said Thursday.

In March, Airstel, Prepaid ₹ 5,985 million rupees to the DOT, eliminating its liabilities from the 2024 spectrum auctions and reducing their spectrum related to ₹ 52,000 million rupees.
