12 best foundations for mature skin that diminish fine lines, according to makeup artists

Foundation is a powerful makeup product that can take years off of your complexion when applied correctly, but when you have mature skin, it can be tricky to find the right formula that doesn’t accentuate fine lines, wrinkles and dryness. To help you find the best options, I consulted four makeup artists who have worked with clients of all ages or even count themselves among the over-40 set. Read on for their advice on choosing foundation for mature skin, application tips and product recommendations.

According to seasoned makeup artist Erica Taylor, who has built a following around her makeup tutorials for people over 40, it’s important to look for foundation that is infused with skin care ingredients. “Look for buzzwords like ‘radiant’ and ‘hydrating,’ and ingredients like peptides, squalane, ceramides and hyaluronic acid,” Taylor says. These are anti-aging ingredients that will benefit your skin in the long run.

Rose Siard, a makeup artist and the founder of Rose and Ben Beauty, agrees that hydration is a main priority for makeup for mature skin, along with a buildable formula. Thick layers of makeup will have an aging effect and are more likely to settle into fine lines and wrinkles, so “the smaller amount of product, the better,” Siard says.

Color matching becomes even more crucial for mature skin types too, according to Siard. Foundation that is too light or dark can highlight fine lines, she says. For the best color matching, Jeanine Lobell, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Neen, says to sample different formulas in person. “Apply it in store or ask for a sample, then see how it looks in daylight and check the wear during the day without committing to a product that might not work for you,” she says.

To ensure a smooth application that enhances the complexion, Taylor says skin prep is key. “Your skin has to be properly hydrated and exfoliated prior to any foundation and makeup application,” Taylor says. “I’ve learned over the years that it’s best not to wait for dry-down time and to marry your foundation immediately into your skin care for most natural results. You can apply with a damp makeup sponge for natural coverage or a brush for those who need more coverage.”

However, Lobell warns that this technique doesn’t always work. If you apply a heavier moisturizer and sunscreen right before your foundation, it “tends to slide around too much, not grabbing the skin properly.” You’ll have to find the sweet spot where your products will blend and dry down together. Applying a makeup primer can help your foundation stay in place too.

“This one of my favorites,” Lobell says of this flexible option that evens skin tone without looking or feeling heavy. “I prefer a tinted moisturizer, as it’s much lighter and doesn’t accentuate fine lines as much,” she adds.

Makeup artist Natalie Dresher swears by this foundation for her clients. “I use this on mothers of the bride, mothers of the groom, more mature clients, more mature brides and the everyday client,” she says. “This is a holy grail for anyone and everyone. The silicone-based foundation is amazing and provides incredible coverage while not seeping into fine lines and pores.” It’s also among the most inclusive options out there with 50 shades.
