Air India is in conversations with the American aircraft manufacturer Boeing to acquire around 10,737 Max Jets after Chinese clients began to reject deliveries in the middle of a commercial war with the United States, to Reuters, two people with the discussions.
The Boeing CEO, Kelly Ortberg, said Wednesday that “due to tariffs, many of our customers in China have indicated that they will not receive delivery,” and the company could redirect airplanes to other needy customers.
The United States and China, the two largest economies in Globe, have imposed duties that exceed 100 percent of the other.
Two sources, which refused to be named as discussions, are private, said that Air India was looking for about 10 narrow Boeing aircraft for its Air India Express budget carrier, which has a fleet of more than 100 planes.
Air India, Air India Express and Boeing did not immediately respond to comments requests.
“Air India is very interested … If the agreement is made, the planes are expected to be added to the fleet by the end of the year,” said the first person, added that the conversations were in the early stages.
Air India Express has previously tasks of white tail tasks, or aircraft made for a client, but acquired by another.
A third source familiar with conversations between Air India and Boeing said that any difference in aircraft configuration between their fleet and incoming planes for Chinese customers can take into account price negotiations.
The measure could be an impulse for the expansion plans of Air India, since group growth has been limited due to the lack of new aircraft.
Last month, Air India CEO, Campbell Wilson, said the airline was a “victim of circumstances”, referring to delivery in delivery that affect Boeing and Airbus.
