The Indian Vegetable Oil Producers Association (IVPA) has urged the Government to restore standardized packages sizes for edible oils. A media statement said that this is an important step to guarantee transparency, restore normality in the market and protect consumer interest.
The rules of legal metrology amendment (basic packaged products), 2021, ordered the declaration of the unit’s sale price (USP). Subsequently, through an amendment, the rules of legal metrology (basic packaged products), 2022, opened Annex II, which demanded that the products be packaged in specific amounts, which allows the market to prolve the packaging.
The expected benefit was to allow producers to pursue as they consider it, and the markets were expected to calm down and the consumer’s awareness on the unit’s sale will be in charge of non -standard package offers.
Communicate clearly
“However, consumers now face a large number of brands and package options that seem similar but are safeguards in daily decision making,” he said.
Edible oil is essential of a home, and packaging must communicate clearly and consistently. The standardized packaging ensures that price comparisons are simple, transparent and fair. Create a level playing field for consumers and producers, encouraging the confidence and value of the brand in the long term, he said.
IVPA urged to restore standard package sizes (a range like 5 kg, 2 kg, 1 kg, 500 grams, 200 grams or other lower size packages) will be a constructive step to strengthen the consumer ecosystem. It is aligned with the broader transparency objectives of governments, fair trade practices and consumer empowerment, he added.
