The first round of the Steelers, Derrick Harmon’s mother, Tiffany Saine, died late on the night of the night shortly after Pittsburgh selected Oregon’s defensive lin with the general selection 21.
Harmon said after he was recruited that he planned to visit his mother, who said he was on a vital support in a hospital in the Detroit suburbs. Saine had endured several brain surgeries and a stroke in recent years. Harmon, 21, told his mother as an inspiration to move forward while heading from the state of Michigan to Oregon.
The president of the Steelers, Art Rooney II, extended the condolences of the team to his new star.
“I thought we are excited to select Derrick in the first round of the NFL Draft, our hearts are heavy when crying the mother of death, Tiffany Saine,” Rooney said in a statement. “We will support Derrick already his family, however, that we can, while sailing for this period of complaint. At times like this, we hope that Derrick will find comfort in the love and support of the organization and the fans of Steelers worldwide.”
