The governor of Colorado, Jared Polis (D), announced Thursday that he signed a measure by adding a “gender” field to state death certificates.
“The change will be in force on January 1. Supporters say that the law creates a space in the forms to recognize the experience of an individual and aligns death certificates with other state records,” said CPR News.
The legislation, called HB 25-1109, created three options for “gender” in death certificates, including men, women and “non-binary.” According to the bill, the forensic, the directors of funerals and any other person who fills the death certificates will be required to list the “gender identity” of the deceased person, according to the report.
“People in Colorado deserve to be recognized in death while living their lives,” said one of the sponsors of the bill, the Democratic state representative Kyle Brown, during the debate.
Death certificates will maintain a separate category for “sex”, where the real biological sex of the deceased person will be listed. According to reports, both Republicans and Democrats agree that registering someone’s real sex is crucial information, “special for medical researchers,” according to the report.
The report states that sex in death certificates is “in disagreement with gender identity”: the false idea that one can identify how or become a different sex than they were born. The report quotes a 2021 review of the death records of 51 transgender people and not idifying in Portland, Oregon, which were supposedly “agents.”
“California and New York allow people to identify as they are not from death certificates, but most states,” says the report.
“The Republicans argued that the legislation is a” deception “and a violation of the rights of the first amendment. They also warned that it could make Colorado a target of the Trump administration, which has insisted on” there are only biological products “and that they are.” “
