The University quickly issued an active handle alert, with the Florida state alert system announcing that the police had “neutralized the threat” shortly after.

“It’s a horrible thing. It is horrible that things like this happen,” Trump said.
He quickly turned to express support for arms ownership, saying: “These things are terrible, but the weapon is not the shooting. People do it.”
Leon’s County Sheriff, Walter McNeil, later identified the suspect as Phoenix Ikner, 20, son of the deputy of a Sheriff within his own department.
He said that Ikner used his mother’s old service weapon in the attack, added that the attacker had been a long -standing member of the Youth Advisory Council of the Sheriff’s office and participated in a series of training programs with the office.

Police said Ikner believes he is a student at the university, but a reason for the attack was not immediately known. Ikner invoked his right to silence when he was arrested, authorities said.
