South Korea’s GDP contracted 0.1% year -on -year in the first quarter, according to advanced figures, marking the first contraction in its economy from the fourth quarter of 2020.
The GDP figure lost the 0.1% increase expected by the Reuters survey, and is a reversal compared to the 1.2% increase in the last quarter of 2024.
The data of the Bank of Korea showed that the fall was mainly due to a drop in construction, and the sector hired 12.4% year after year.
